Genesis 1:26-31

“Let us.” In Genesis 1:26, God decides to make humanity. And in deciding to make us, God used the word “us.” This isn’t just God speaking in the “royal we” - it’s an acknowledgment that God, within Godself, is in community.

The One God is made of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three-in-one. God is community, and God created us for community. When Adam was the only person, that was the first thing in creation God said wasn’t good (Genesis 2:18). We need each other.

We’ve talked these past several weeks about God’s mission to restore shalom by making Himself known to all and by helping all creation flourish. We’ve talked about the focus of our mission as being broad and specific. Last week we talked about our first strategy for accomplishing our mission: Worship.

This week, we’ll look at the second strategy we have for accomplishing God’s mission in the world: Love deeply in community.

We were made for relationships. We were never meant to do life on our own. In the Garden of Eden, God created humankind to be in a relationship with each other and with Him. That’s God’s idea of perfection - relationships.

That means as His people we prioritize relationships. Not programs, to-do lists, or dollar signs. Relationships. To build relationships, we have to have space for relationships. To build relationships, we have to value relationships.

Many of us struggle to make relationships a priority when there are “things” to get done. How might God be speaking to you and challenging you about relationships being the thing that needs to get done?
