Read Acts 2:42-47

“Added to their number daily.” Acts 2:42-47 gives us the clearest picture we have of what was happening in the early church.

WOW! They were meeting together daily. They were sharing everything they had with each other. They were literally selling their possessions to help each other out. And we read that because of the radically committed community they practiced, more and more people came to Christ every day!

Sometimes we act as though we have to choose a priority: our fellow Christians, or those outside the community of faith. The book of Acts tells us we can do both!

In Christian community, we care for those inside the community, but keep our eyes open for those on the outside.

If the early church had been so insider-focused that they didn’t notice who was missing (The One), they wouldn’t have grown. On the other hand, if the early church had ignored each other’s needs, letting each other go poor and hungry, who would have wanted to join them?

The beauty of our community is that the way we love each other is both a taste of God’s shalom for us to enjoy and an attractive witness that invites others in to taste it for themselves.

Do you long for a community like this? Especially in the Western world, this kind of community is rare, as we tend to be more individually focused as a society. Today, pray for Harbor to look more and more like the early church. You might also consider one way you can take a step toward this kind of radically committed community. What might that look like in your life?
