Lent: A Season of Reflection - March 29 | Glory

March 29 | Glory

Read Mark 10:32-45

“You don’t know what you’re asking.” For the third time in Mark’s gospel, Jesus predicts His death. The disciples again don’t know what to do with this idea.

The first time He predicted His death, they argued over who was the greatest. The second time, Peter tried to rebuke him. The third time, the disciples again pivot from the uncomfortable idea of the death of their teacher to talking about their own status.

The juxtaposition of Jesus’ prediction of death and the disciples’ obsession with status is on purpose. Mark over and over wants to drive home the point that the Lordship of Jesus didn’t look at ALL like what they had expected. They had expected a king with pomp, circumstance, and royal robes.

We see that this far into their journey with Jesus, they were still confused about the ultimate goal of Jesus’s journey. They wanted glory; Jesus came to serve. They wanted position; Jesus left his. They wanted power; Jesus surrendered to death.

Even if we’ve been following Jesus a long time, there are things we still miss about what it means to be a disciple.

Today, confess your need for Jesus to continually open your eyes to the way His Kingdom differs from that of the world.
