Read Mark 12:35-37

How?  In Jesus’ day, the back and forth of questions was a pretty common way to work out issues of faith. So even as we read these back-and-forth conversations with Jesus and the other religious leaders, we should recognize that it was a normal practice in rabbinic tradition, not necessarily a conflict.

Here we see Jesus ask a question, as he often does. After the three questions asked of him in this chapter, he asks his own question: “How can the Messiah be the son of David, if David calls the Messiah ‘Lord?’”

Using the most quoted Old Testament passage in the NT (Psalm 110), Jesus works to explain to the crowd that the Messiah will be much more than simply a descendant of David.

Jesus uses this verse to show that the Messiah would be superior to David. He would be David’s Lord. He would be the very Son of God.

In all of this, Jesus is addressing this question of authority that has been asked. He is slowly helping the crowd to understand that the Messiah is God, so that they can recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

Today, ask Jesus to help you understand what it means that He is not just your Savior, but your Lord.
